Ceiling fans can add some much needed, airflow and style to a room., Hey, I'm Rob North Master Craftsman. And today I'm going to bring you up to speed on how to hang one. Now every ceiling fan is a little bit different. So you want to make sure you read the instructions carefully before you jump into this thing. Look at me. I'm a tall dude. So you want to make sure you get a ceiling fan that works with your space. Not too big, not too small. Most importantly, not too low. All right now, if you're looking for a fan with a light on it, you want to check to see if your wiring is set up with two switches.
If not, it's no big deal, because you can still make it work. Just that one switch will run the whole thing. But then you've got those chains that hand down from the thing. That was driving me freaking, nuts. All right now. This next step can save your life. Literally. Can save your life. Kill the power to that switch. So go to your main breaker box find the breaker associated with that switch and kill it. You know ceiling fans are a lot like snowflakes. They're, all just a little bit different. So you want to make sure that you go through this manual carefully. All right Don't skip around. Because if you do all you're going to do is end up with a headache.
Now your next step is to identify the wires. You're going to go ahead and pull them. Out. See what you're working with. A black wire or a red wire, are always going to be your feeds or your hots. They're, going to provide power. The white wire is neutral. All right. That's going to let the cycle of electricity flow. And the green wire is a ground wire. Now, if you don't find a green wire in the box, don't sweat, that. I'll, show you how to deal with that in a second. So now we're at the point where you have to decide whether you're going to use one power source or two.
In our case, we have two. So we can connect both the fan and the light to two different power sources and control them with two different switches. If you don't have that setup, then all you do is you connect the motor and the light to that one power source. And again the chains will control what happens when. Now, this bracket has to be installed. Securely. That's what keeps the fan up. If you don't do that stuff, then the fan could come down in your face. Ain't, nothing relaxing about that. Now, here's a tip you probably won't find in the manual.
